Within many companies, there is the need for someone to oversee individual projects. This is usually true of companies who perform work on a customer's site such as in the engineering, commercial plumbing, and building fields. The work is sometimes not even on the customer's site, but on a new construction project, so it's pertinent to have someone on site that can make sure the work is being performed per the original specifications of the customer. In many cases, the project manager will be the one who first specs the job, places the bid, and determines what supplies and work force is needed in order to complete the job.
