Toumaz wanted to develop zero-administration wireless device for intelligent, non-intrusive body monitoring that helps patients manage their chronic diseases and detect adverse events earlier and develop a highly reliable, secure, and scalable system for healthcare providers to manage their patients. The challenge was to ensure continuous transfer of physical and biochemical data from mobile terminals to medical records with automated alerts to monitoring clinicians if safety thresholds are exceeded and avoid the time, cost, and risk of building proprietary software by using off-the-shelf, standards-based components. Toumaz developed Sensium, a wireless sensor interface platform that monitors vital signs such as temperature, heart, breathing, or personalized applications such as physical activity that may be worn in a disposable digital "Band aid" or smart patch.
