University of Bristol Powers Up New IBM Supercomputer

The University of Bristol wanted to increase the speed and capacity of its supercomputing facilities, creating a new centralized resource for all users. The University wanted to create a scalable, high-performance supercomputer that would also keep energy consumption to a minimum. However, the existing data center lacked the necessary floor space, power and cooling facilities to house the planned solution. Working with IBM Global Technology Services, the University of Bristol is building a new 3360-core supercomputer based on IBM System x servers and using ClearSpeed floating-point arithmetic acceleration cards. The supercomputer will be housed in a new data center designed and constructed by IBM Global Technology Services, and incorporating APC InfraStruXure water-cooled racks.
