Starting with IBM i version 6.1 (V6R1) and POWER6 hardware, IBM i can now host IBM i. Previous support was limited to AIX and Linux. A client logical partition (LPAR) is a partition that is using the I/O resources of another partition (called the host or hosting partition). For example, a customer has a large production IBM i partition and wants to create a smaller test/development/training partition using the resources of the production partition. Client partitions can be a mix of "Virtual" and physical I/O resources. In contrast, a traditional logical partition environment is a system with individual partitions that use their own I/O resources. A Hardware Management Console (HMC) is used to manage host and client partitions.
