Using WiMAX for Reliable and Cost-Effective Real Time Intelligent Transport Management

Reading has a vibrant economy with a forecast of sustained growth. The Borough Council has well established partnerships with the city's business community and is constantly working to shape the future of the town and its infrastructure. The challenge was to provide a cost-effective and reliable connectivity solution to support an Urban Traffic Management Control (UTMC) program integrating into a regional Intelligent Transport System (ITS). Reading introduced a WiMAX-based broadband network connecting CCTV cameras, traffic lights, and a traffic control system (SCOOT) in the 3 GHz licensed band.
