What Competence Is Required Of A Project Manager?

This paper throws light on the competence required of a project manager. It is a difficult task to decide which candidate will be competent to become a project manager, as it is one of the most critical steps of choosing the right project manager for better future of the company. In normal terms, it may sound good that a project manager should be sufficiently qualified to mange a project, but in practicality, it involves a lot of other issues. The competence of a project manager greatly depends on the characteristics of the project. An individual who may be competent in managing residential home construction need not be competent to manage nuclear power plant construction. A project manager who performs really well may not show good results because of lack of competency. It is essential to choose a project manager who is not only a competent employee in the work place but also has the required competency for achievement. The key competencies that are required for a project manager are project management, project strategies, project life cycle, project appraisal, project environment, organizational design, proper communication, control and coordination and management development. Apart from project management, the project manager should be able to manage operations and technical management, finance, marketing and sales and information technology for a successful project.
