WEP is IEEE 802.11 default standard for wireless security. It provides protection from unauthorized users. The basic security authentication mechanism provided by IEEE 802.11 is the Service Set Identifier (SSID). This identifier can be used as a shared secret. This identifier is generally transmitted in the encrypted from. Another feature of IEEE 802.11 is programming the Wireless Access Points to allow access to the Wireless LAN by MAC address. This method explicitly denies access to all the clients except those that are authorized to use the Wireless LAN. It maintains MAC address Access Lists to identify the authorized users. WEP also uses the RC4 security mechanism for data privacy.
