Virtualization enables enterprises to consolidate multiple servers without sacrificing application isolation, scale their infrastructure as their needs grow, and increase availability through dynamic provisioning and relocation of critical systems. Combining the open source Xen hypervisor in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 with ninth-generation Dell PowerEdge servers and Dell storage enables enterprises to create a dynamic data center that can scale easily to meet enterprise requirements. The virtualization layer, often called the hypervisor or Virtual Machine (VM) monitor, abstracts underlying physical hardware to present a uniform set of hardware resources - such as processors, memory, networks, and storage blocks - to VMs.
