In case you haven't noticed, Messages on iOS 8 works a little differently these days. Specially, if you don't just want to text, you've got some other options.
First, if for whatever reason you can't or don't want to type out a message, you can now record and send audio. Press down the microphone button, and then hit the arrow to send it.
Second, if you've had just about all you can take of that group message, leave the conversation. Just go to details, scroll down, and make your exit.
Third, if you hold down the camera button, you can easily take a picture or a video. But beware, after you take it, it sends automatically.
And fourth, if you go to Message settings, you can pick how long you want to keep your messages, like 30 days, 1 year, or forever.
