Gizmodo takes us on a closer look at DuoSense technology, which powers Dell’s new XT’s touch-sensitive and pen-enabled display. DuoSense is made by N-Trig, an Israeli company with offices in Tel Aviv, Taiwan, and Austin. The DuoSense screen is unique, because it is the only input device in the market that combines both a pressure-sensitive pen with multitouch onto a single surface.

The ability to have electrostastic, battery-free pen input with 256 levels of pressure and being able to seamlessly switch from pen to hand back to pen without a hitch is quite unique, to the point of justifying a price much higher than that of regular pen-based devices… More importantly, it feels natural and simple.

If you’re looking forward to getting your hands on the Dell XT, you might be interested to know that although the Latitude XT uses the screen, it doesn’t have multitouch support — yet. According to N-Trig, “All it takes is a firmware upgrade and it’s ready to go,” and the fault has nothing to do with Vista.

The good news here is that Dell is the first of many leading manufacturers lining up to use N-Trig’s technology. Also, the screen is not limited to tablets. It can be implemented in anything with a screen, be it handhelds, medical devices, TVs,  and even gaming-related devices and peripherals.
