Build customized courses through TrainersDirect

The TrainersDirect Web site can provide instructors for almost any kind of class in a variety of formats. It also offers other resources for trainers, including links to professional organizations, assessment tests, and best practice Web sites.

Trainers need to know what training options they have for their organizations and how to find those courses. There are many places to find “canned” workshops, but fewer sites are available that offer customized courses, especially sites that offer a wide range of customized options. This week’s site,, is in that business—delivering customized training through their network of trainers.

A plan for customized courses
TrainersDirect is a clearinghouse for a variety of trainers to offer their services. According to the Web site, trainers from the company have worked with numerous large firms: Kodak, Lucent Technologies, Xerox, Bausch & Lomb, Texaco, AT&T, and Hewlett-Packard.

The site offers an impressive list of courses available for customization. At the time of this review, there were 58 courses available. Their categories included:
  • Change
  • Finance and accounting
  • Communication skills
  • Management skills
  • Customer satisfaction measurement
  • Marketing
  • Direct marketing seminars (in-house and public seminars, offered through the Direct Marketing Association)
  • Project management
  • Executive development
  • Sales
  • Team
  • Time and stress management
  • Train the trainer

Each specific description gives you an idea of the materials the company starts with when creating a class. In other words, the company takes their designed course and makes modifications for you—instead of building every class from scratch. The descriptions are clear and generally well written. Workshops can be presented in one- to three-day formats. There is a form at the end of each description you can fill out to get more information.

The description pages don’t list the costs of the courses. To find prices you have to click on a rather small link on the home page entitled, “Investment Information.” The prices seem a bit high compared to off-the-shelf workshops but drop substantially if the class is delivered more than once.

Other features of interest
Even if you aren’t looking for customized training solutions, there are good reasons to visit this site. It offers a nice selection of resources, including:

Management articles
Within the Resources section, the Management Articles link seems the most useful to a wide variety of trainers. It is impressive in its size and breadth. It features articles on:
  • Business management
  • Customer service
  • Executive
  • Human resources
  • Management skills
  • Project management
  • Sales and marketing
  • Technology
  • Time management
  • Training and development

Topics include “Managing Multiple Priorities,” “Don't Let Your Systems Drive Your Customers Crazy,” “How to Overcome the Four Reasons People Don't Buy From You,” and “Automated Software Testing.” The articles I reviewed were well written and informative. This area will be a valuable resource for trainers and performance consultants.

Final impressions
This is the most informative site I’ve seen for customized training solutions. Even if you don’t need customization services, it is worth a look for the associated resources. While there is room for improvement, this site is useful and offers solid content.
