Royal Mail has announced that Network Rail director of corporate development Catherine Doran will join the company as CIO on 1 September.

Doran, who topped the CIO50 list in 2009, will oversee the company’s £2bn technology transformation project, which includes the implementation of new systems, software and equipment across the Royal Mail Group.

She will report to Royal Mail director of business development and technology Alex Smith and join the group executive team committee, with which she will work to bring in the technology to support the company’s wider business transformation agenda.

Doran has held senior management and IT roles in the public and private sector throughout her career and has been with Network Rail since 2006. During her time with the business she has led the design, planning and implementation of a multibillion-pound transformation programme.

She will replace former Transport for London CIO Yvonne Ferguson. Ferguson was appointed as Royal Mail CIO in June 2010 following the departure of Robin Dargue to Alcatel Lucent.

Dargue, who in 2008 also topped the CIO50 list, was drafted in to lead the initial phase of the technology transformation in 2007.
