Steve Williams is head of IT at one of the UK’s best-performing local authorities, serving 280,000 citizens and 5,000 staff across 380 sites.

At Sunderland Williams brought £5m of investment into the city when he led the team that won the government’s ‘Digital Challenge’ competition to find the city best using IT to connect with communities.

Williams has a degree in economics and German and his career experience includes various IT roles at Mercedes-Benz, ICI, Viasystems and the Health Clinic.

He is an advisor to the Local Government Association on e-government, a member of the Tyne and Wear New Technology Institute and chair of the Phoenix Group charity, which runs theatre workshops for autistic children. In his spare time Williams competes in triathlons and admits to working as a roadie for his son’s rock band.
