Ian Buchanan became Société Generale Corporate & Investment Banking’s global CIO in 2009, where he is currently engaged in a major transformation of the bank’s systems and operating model across 33 countries.

Buchanan joined the company after a number of high-profile roles in the banking industry, including his previous role as head of the IT department at Alliance and Leicester, now part of Santander. Initially joining as CIO, Buchanan was subsequently appointed to the board with responsibility for customer service, operations, technology and shared services.

During his time at Alliance and Leicester, Buchanan oversaw a major transformation of the group’s technology and processing strategy, involving the replacement of the company’s core banking systems.

He also previously held a CIO position at Nomura, before being promoted to COO and joining the bank’s executive committee, and has held a number of project management and systems development roles at Credit Suisse.

Buchanan has also worked for BP and Guinness, and has a degree in Physics from Durham University.

In 2008, Buchanan featured on the CIO50 list while in his role at Alliance and Leicester.
