Job Title : CIO

Organization : Financial Services Authority

Financial Services Authority (FSA) CIO Gareth Lewis has had a varied career with roles including group CIO for Virgin and group CIO for utilities company Centrica.

This is his third appearance on the CIO50. Since arriving at the UK financial service regulator, Lewis has been focused on restructuring the IT organisation, which has included the introduction of a consulting group.

During his six years at Virgin he was instrumental in establishing most of the nine Virgin Mobile businesses globally and drove a major outsourcing programme.

While group CIO at Centrica, Lewis was responsible for infrastructure, governance, information risk and security, and corporate information services.

Before this, Lewis was something of an entrepreneur, founding several businesses providing services for telecoms companies. He gained his telecoms expertise through roles with Unisys and Digital Equipment Corporation.

Lewis has also been a partner in the telecommunications practice at KPMG Consulting, where he established the management services company’s European telecoms systems integration practice.

Lewis’ academic career saw him gain an MA in engineering from Jesus College at Cambridge and an MBA from Cranfield School of Management. He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
