Ian Buchanan is global CIO of Société Générale Corporate & Investment Banking (SGCIB), a role he has held since 2009. At SGCIB he is currently engaged in a major expansion and transformation of the investment bank’s systems and operating model across 33 countries.
Buchanan has held a number of other high-profile roles in the banking industry. Prior to joining SGCIB he was group CIO at Alliance and Leicester, now part of Santander, overseeing a major transformation of the group’s IT and operations capability involving the replacement of its core banking systems. He was also subsequently appointed to the board as group managing director – with responsibility for customer service, operations, technology and shared services.
Buchanan, who holds a degree in physics from Durham University, has also been CIO and later COO with responsibility for operations, technology and business services at Japanese investment bank Nomura, where he spent 11 years. Early on in his career he held a number of project management and systems development roles at BP, Credit Suisse and Diageo.
It’s not the first time Buchanan has made the CIO50 list – he figured in last year’s top 50 and also made the cut back in 2008 during his time at Alliance & Leicester.
