Job Title : CIO
Organization : Transport for London
With London’s transport network expected to carry millions of extra visitors during next year’s Olympics, Ian Campbell is working to deliver new technology to make sure the capital is ready.
By the time the Olympics get underway, Transport for London (TfL) aims to have its online journey planner tool and other customer service systems ready to deal with the surge in demand.
Outside of preparing for the Olympics, Campbell is helping to realise TfL’s transformation programme, which is designed to allow its 28,000-strong workforce to do their jobs more efficiently.
Technology is used to keep costs down at TfL, with nearly all office staff using energy-efficient thin-client desktops to access a system hosted at a single datacentre.
Campbell is also helping TfL achieve its goal of inspiring developers to build more apps providing journey information, by releasing more travel data online.
During his career, Campbell has held CIO roles at major national and international companies, where he oversaw numerous organisational transformation programmes.
Before joining TfL, Campbell held positions as CIO for Royal Mail Letters, group CIO at both British Energy and Energis, and CIO and CTO of Citibank.
Campbell is also chairman of the Corporate IT Forum and board member of EuroCIO, a group that allows CIOs across Europe to share IT best practice.
