Stephen Norman made his debut on the CIO50 list in 2010 as CIO of the investment bank division of RBS, Global Banking and Markets.

Norman has been with RBS since 2005 and is responsible for the global banking and markets technology infrastructure encompassing more than 5,000 IT professionals located in the bank’s various trading centres including London, New York and Hong Kong.

Norman’s team has overseen the largest bank integration in history, UK government investment into the bank, an overhaul of the regulation system and a major investment programme. As a result of this work, Norman was named Chief Information Officer of the Year at the 2010 Banking Technology Awards.

Also in 2010, Norman helped establish the Global Banking & Markets Technology Academy near Delhi in India, where RBS technologists from around the world can be trained at a centre of excellence.

Before joining RBS, Norman spent almost 10 years at Merrill Lynch and before that worked for Paribas Capital markets between 1991 and 1996. These roles took Norman to New York and Asia where he managed large-scale software projects as well as global infrastructure and sourcing.

Before entering the world of capital markets, Norman gained an MA in physics and philosophy from Balliol College, Oxford and a PhD from Stanford University in California.

Having founded a software company after graduating, Norman supports research in intelligent tutoring software which he believes will eventually transform how children are taught.
