I create lots of bulleted and numbered lists. Fortunately, Word and PowerPoint both make this task easy. Just click the Numbering or Bullets icon, and start typing. However, all that automation complicates the addition of subitems. By subitem, I mean an item or list that’s related to an individual bullet or number.

Pressing Enter will position the cursor on the next line and display a new bullet or number. Pressing Backspace removes the bullet or number, but introduces a new problem — extra lines you have to delete. It works, but it’s clumsy.

Fortunately, there’s a better way. To add a subitem or list, press  Shift + Enter instead of Enter. The cursor will jump to the next line without adding a bullet or number.
