If you didn’t understand the title of this post, odds are the Web site we’re discussing isn’t really for you. Why? Because sometimes truth is geekier than fiction:

Love Long & Prosper
[Trek Passions is] a 100% free SciFi personals & social networking community site for science fiction lovers, including but not limited to lovers of Star Trek and Star Wars. Find others who share your passion for Sci Fi. Meet people who read Isaac Asimov, Ben Bova, Robert A. Heinlein, Douglas Adams, Arthur C. Clarke & more. Grok!? Feel like you are always wearing a red shirt in your relationships? In Pon Farr? Whether you are just looking for like-minded friends, someone fun to attend a Sci Fi convention with, or maybe something more, Trek Passions is here for you.

Now, it would be easy to take cheap shots at this site and its user base, but we at Geekend like to err on the side of mercy when it comes to geek-related romantic efforts. In all fairness, Trek Passions is meeting a legitimate market need, as a significant percentage (but far from a majority) of the sci-fi fanatics I know and love are tragically single.

Will Trek Passions help them? Hard to say. From a technical standpoint, the site design is rather kludgy and doesn’t play well with Firefox. From a sociological standpoint, my wholly unscientific survey of the user base suggests a gender skew of about 25:1 in favor of males, though some of the usernames don’t lend themselves to easy classification. Geek girls, here are your fish in a barrel. Geek guys, well, a little competition never hurt anybody.

More generally, if you have trouble socializing because of your geek obsessions, using an obscure geek-centric online social network to solve the problem is a bit like trying to put out a fire by setting more fires. In a theoretical sense, it can work, but in practicality, it’s much more likely to exacerbate the problem than solve it. Still, it’s probably a better place to find geek dates than Facebook.

Oh, and for the muggles, here’s what Imzadi means.
