What’s 58.3 mean? If you don’t know all of the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet error codes by heart, how would you find out what your printer is telling you when it displays 58.3? That question was recently posted with a value of 500 TechPoints in the TechRepublic Forums. Here’s the answer.

Go to the source, baby!
TechRepublic passport owner MillerB posted this question in the SupportRepublic’s PC Troubleshooting section: “I have a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4MV. We’re getting the message ‘58.3 error.’ We don’t have a manual. Can anyone tell me what this error is? We’ve turned the printer off and then back on, no change.”

Another TechRepublic passport owner, PaulP, suggested going to the Hewlett-Packard Web page titled “HP LaserJet Printers – Printer Control Panel Display Status and Error Messages.” That page contains a lot of information, so use your browser’s find feature and search for “58.” There are two kinds of “58” error messages, and the 58.X section reveals that this error has to do with failure of the paper tray’s lifter mechanism.”
