Many of us–even members of the elite IT crowd–need a bit of help achieving our goals. Work can become an obsession, leaving the balance between work and home way out of whack. If you like keeping track of your progress on numerous fronts, you might want to turn to your best friend…software.
There are plenty of goal-oriented apps in the Google Play Store, and most of those apps offer pretty much the same feature set, all wrapped up in a variation on the same interface. Recently, I was contacted by a company that created something with just enough uniqueness to make it stand out.
Goalmap‘s take on the goal-setting space makes it incredibly easy to set goals (keeping those goals is all on the user). Let’s look at installing and using goalmap on the Android platform.

- Open the Google Play Store on your Android device.
- Search for goalmap.
- Locate and tap the entry by goalmap.
- Tap Install.
- If prompted, tap Accept.
- Allow the installation to complete.
Once installed, you’ll find the launcher for goalmap on your home screen, or in your App Drawer, or in both spots. Tap the launcher, and you’ll be welcomed by the goalmap intro screen. Swipe through those pages to land on the goalmap login screen (Figure A). You can log in with a social account or create a new account with an email address. After successfully logging in, it’s time to start using goalmap.
Goalmap sets itself apart with the ease in which you can add new goals. From the main window (Figure B), you can shop the Goal store (the app and the goals are free) to quickly add a new goal to the app.
Tap on a topic, such as Work-Life Balance, and scroll through the available goals. If you find one you want to add, tap it and configure it (Figure C).
After you configure the goal, tap the I Want To Reach This Goal button, and you’re good to go.
If you don’t find your goal listed in the Goal store, you can always create one. To do this, tap the + button from the main screen. In the resulting window (Figure D), select a category for your goal, name your goal, give your goal a description, and tap either the It’s A Habit or the It’s An Aim button.
In the next screen, you’ll configure the target, and you can set a reminder for the goal (Figure E). When the goal is set up to meet your needs, tap I Want To Reach This Goal, and you’re all set. After you create a goal, you’ll be on that goal’s page. Tap the Log Your Progress button and tap the + button to add activity to the goal.
A caveat about the reminder feature: You can only choose between daily, weekly, and monthly options–it would be nice to include an hourly reminder for goals that require more frequent updates. Even if you set your goal target to multiple instances, you can still only select from those options.
My guess is that goalmap will be mining users’ goals for inclusion in the Goal store. Goalmap says nothing about it on the app store, but I would imagine you might see your custom goals eventually show up. In the FAQ, it says (under a question regarding sharing goals) that they have plans to “unlock the power of the community within the Goalmap app,” which indicates to me they plan on adding a user section for the Goal store. It’s probably a good idea.
A simple app makes goal-setting easier
If you want to be able to set goals with just a few quick taps, goalmap might be the solution for you. Although goalmap doesn’t offer nearly as many options as some of the similar Android apps (which includes Raise the Bar, Goal Tracker And Habit List, and Habit Bull), it does allow you to very quickly set a new goal and easily add an activity and track progress.
If simplicity is what you seek, goalmap delivers.
