Google is allegedly working on three different phone products, according to InformationWeek’s Stephen Wellman:

  1. An iPhone-like smartphone developed with Samsung
  2. A handset powered by Google apps and developed with UK carrier Orange
  3. A WiFi phone developed with Dell and Microsoft

Wellman has also reported that a European Google executive has confirmed the development of a Google Phone, but like the rest of us, Stephen is still unsure which of these three projects was actually being confirmed by the exec.

Today Bloomberg.com posted an article in which Alan Eustace, senior vice president of engineering and research at Google, stated, “We’re not doing a mobile phone.”

A Reuters report today also quoted Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, who said, “We believe Google is working with, not against, Apple in the mobile world.” Munster believes that Google is simply developing software aimed at mobile phones.

Building software for various mobile platforms sounds more like Google’s style. They have yet to really capitalize on the Google brand name for profit or product development. However, if Google decided to reverse that trend, then a GooglePhone or GPhone could potentially have the same kind of market buzz as Apple’s eagerly-anticipated iPhone.
