I had a moment of panic over the weekend when the good folks at Grisoft informed me that my AVG Anti-Virus software was not going to be supported in a month or so. They offered to update and upgrade me to AVG 7.5 for a mere $30. I thought, great I have to find a new free anti-virus application.
But it turns out that Grisoft was just taking the opportunity to sell me a version of their software while leaving out the fact that I could download a free copy of version 7.5 if I was so inclined. It’s not that I don’t think Grisoft should get some compensation for their fine application, but I have become so accustomed to getting it for free that paying for it just seems wrong somehow.
Besides, I could get by without an anti-virus application if I had to — I don’t surf to unknown places very often. But I have been hit with a malware bomb before, and I want to make sure that doesn’t happen again. So I will happily continue to use AVG, current version 7.5, and will confidently recommend it to anyone who asks me for advice on such matters.
