Allegations that certain MacBooks contain faulty 2.5-inch Seagate hard drives has now been acknowledged by Apple. InformationWeek, who contacted Apple about the problem, was informed that Apple is currently “looking into” reports it has received pertaining to the issue.

According to CNET News.com:

You can figure out if your MacBook has one of the scarlet drives by checking the firmware revision number in System Profiler. If you scored a 7.01, Retrodata advises backing up your data and to consider replacing the drive.

Retrodata notes that:

Should you have one of these drives in your system, we believe the problem is serious enough to warrant copying all your data off the drive and replacing it with an alternative drive, or a retail-version Seagate drive.
