The field of e-discovery has grown 300% in the last several years and is a $2 billion industry. It’s becoming so big that many attorneys are picking it up as a legal specialty. (If you don’t already know, e-discovery is the process in which electronic data is located, secured, and then searched when it is going to be used as evidence in a civil or criminal legal case.)
Perhaps the biggest opportunities e-discovery presents are for IT pros. Anyone with a knowledge of information technology and legal processes could be invaluable to tech-challenged attorneys and clients.
The IT pro’s role in e-discovery is evolving, but as of now, according to about.com, the responsibilities include:
- Assessing a client’s ESI.
- Helping to create ESI preservation policies.
- Serving on e-discovery teams.
- Ensuring compliance with the new federal rules regarding ESI.
- Educating clients on e-discovery policies.
- Drafting and communicating litigation hold procedures.
- Using technology to facilitate discovery.
- Assisting in the collection, processing, review, analysis and production of ESI.
- Serving as a liaison between the legal team, IT personnel, vendors and records management personnel.
In top markets such as New York, e-discovery managers earn annual salaries ranging from $125,000 to $250,000.
