Users of 1Password are in for a treat. AgileBits, the company behind this outstanding password management tool, has released a major update to the mobile app, and it’s one that everyone should get behind immediately.
The upgrade for the Android take on the app gives 1Password a much-needed Material Design makeover, which gives the software a seriously improved look and feel. The improvements also include support for fingerprint sensors (such as those found on the Nexus 5X or 6 P, running Marshmallow), as well as a new feature that’ll make 1Password even more relevant for businesses: 1Password for Teams. This feature (which is currently in beta) makes sharing passwords with teams a mobile reality.
If you’ve never used 1Password, it offers all the standard features of mobile password managers:
- View usernames and passwords, credit card information, addresses, notes, and more
- Automatically log in to websites
- Built-in search
- Sync your 1Password vault across all mobile devices and computers
- Built-in password generator
I’m going to assume you’ve already set up 1Passwordand know your way around the standard features. With that said, let’s jump directly to using 1Password for Teams.
Setting up your 1Password team
Note: Screenshots cannot be taken while working within the 1Password app.
- Sign up for a 1Password for Teams account (it’s free) with an email address.
- Give the team a name.
- Choose a URL for the team (remember the URL — you’ll need it later).
- Check your email, and verify the account.
- Enter a first/last name and upload an avatar (optional). (We’re still working on the 1Password website.)
- When you’re presented with an account key, tuck that away in a safe location.
- Create a master password for the team (we’re still on the iPassword site).
- Sign in to your 1Password Team account page.
Adding team members to 1Password on Android
Although 1Password is available for Android, iOS, Mac, and Windows, I’m focusing on the Android version of the app. On the Google-centric platform, here’s how you add team members.
- Open 1Password on the device to be added to the team.
- Swipe right from the left edge.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap 1Password for Teams.
- Tap Add account.
- Tap Sign In Manually.
- Enter the required information (Team URL, Account Key, Email Address, Master Password). Important notes: The Team URL is the URL created during the team setup phase on the 1Password website. The Account key is the user-specific key generated by the app when the user set up 1Password on their device. The email address and master password are also from the user being added.
- Tap SAVE ACCOUNT.
Once the device has been added to a team, it will be up to the 1Password Team administrator to add that user to any of the vaults for which they need access. This requires you to:
- Log into your 1Password Team web account.
- Click Vaults.
- Select the vault to be used.
- Click Manage Access (under People).
- Enter the username.
- Click Done.
The user will now be able to select their team vault by doing the following:
- Log into 1Password on their device.
- Swipe right from the left edge.
- Tap the Primary drop-down.
- Select the vault to be used.
The user can now work within that vault. Any items previously created items (or items that user creates) will automatically sync to the team.
Remember, it’s still in beta
Working with teams on 1Password isn’t nearly as intuitive as it could be. For example, the app offers adding a device to a team via QR scanner, but that feature doesn’t seem to work yet — remember, this is in beta. However, once you get the hang of using the app, you’ll find it incredibly powerful and useful.
I highly recommend you take the time to get up to speed with 1Password, as it will most likely become your go-to service for sharing passwords, logins, and more with your teams.
