IBM announced the acquisition of AptSoft, a firm that specializes in development of business event processing software.

An excerpt from ZDNet:

IBM already has event-processing offerings in their portfolio, but according to Ed Lynch, business integration portfolio product manager, what AptSoft brings to the table is a set of tools that takes these capabilities out of IT and puts them in the hands of business people. It also moves event processing out of its traditional niche in financial services and enables it across industries and sectors.

Evaluation of complex business events on a real-time basis holds a lot of value for businesses. IBM plans to include the tools from AptSoft as part of its WebSphere platform.

Event processing is seen as the big emerging market with SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) poised to take off.
