A half page headline on the front page of The Sunday Times
today read Stolen IDs sold on web for £1. The article is quite brief with little technical
information, but then the purpose is more to raise awareness than anything
else. It details how one reporter obtained
samples of 13 stolen British identities including passwords, bank and credit
card details. He was offered stolen
identities by Russian users of www.carder.info
for as little as $2 USD. It is mentioned
that these details are being collected via key loggers and Trojans. The Russian police would apparently not
comment, only saying that they are co-operating with their British
counterparts.
While none of this is new or unusual I think its good that
public awareness is being raisedfront page of the Sunday Times is pretty high
profile.
