Iomega, which got itself onto the IT map through its Zip and Jaz drives that were such a huge success, albeit of yesteryear fame, is working hard to transform itself into more than just a “zip drive company.”

According to eWeek, Iomega is partnering with Postini of San Carlos, California, to deliver Postini’s security and compliance solutions to the small- and mid-size market by tapping on its existing network of 15,000 VARs and distributors.

According to Iomega’s CEO Jonathan Huberman:

Web-based backup and disaster recover services are also in the cards. Later this year, he said, Iomega will launch remote backup and later follow that with a business continuity service.

It is clear that Iomega is leveraging its existing SMB customer base to sell products in niches where it has identified a demand. In the longer run though, it remains to be seen just how Iomega can make the hardware to services leap and successfully transform and position itself to meet new market segments.
