When I was growing up, I wanted to be a programmer. When I got to college, while I discovered that I did not enjoy Computer Science as a field of study, I still wanted to be a programmer. I had a particular image of what a development job was like, in no small part influenced by my perceptions (which are not always accurate) of my father’s work life (he is a programmer as well). Let’s just say that the reality is a bit different from what I expected! Some of the differences between my expectations and reality are good, and some of them are not so good. But overall, I am pretty darned happy with the career choices I have made.
