The median annual pay for ICT managers for the year to April 2011 was £47,254, making the role the 14th highest paid job in the UK – just below research and development managers and above senior local government officials.

Pay for IT managers – a category that encompasses roles such as data processing manager, IT manager and systems manager – varies widely, with the bulk of the profession earning between £26,932 and £87,216, according to the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (Ashe), which was published last week.

IT managers’ pay is on the increase, with the survey finding that the median annual pay for the role is 2.1 per cent higher than last year.

The survey echoes anecdotal evidence in a report by IT skills body e-skills UK published earlier this year, which reported that IT managers pay was on the rise.

Perhaps unsurprisingly the highest paid role on the list was classed as “head of major organisation”, which took home a median of £114,549 last year, an increase of 15.3 per cent year-on-year.

The ONS’ annual Ashe survey is based on data from one per cent of company employees who pay tax via PAYE.
