Sony and Toshiba have announced the availability of Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED)-based television screens in the immediate future. Advantages of the OLED displays include less power consumption, while providing sharper and crisper images than their LCD counterparts.

OLED-based screens are thinner, more power efficient, and provide clearer and crisper images with faster screen response times. Announcements by Sony and Toshiba (PC World) are in tune with the extensive research that has gone into OLED-based displays.

The recent announcements have been termed promising though not profitable immediately (AllHeadlinenews). The new televisions have lesser life expectancy than the LCD TVs.

Nonetheless, OLED-based displays promise immense potential, especially for mobile computing where power efficiency is the lifeline.
