Some companies involve their developers in the sales process; it lets them get technical resources face-to-face with customers to learn their needs, explain the technical side of things, and more. The drawback is that developers are not trained salespeople and can sometimes do or say things that are counterproductive to the sales process.
Over the years, I have been in this situation enough times that I feel very comfortable with the sales process, and I believe I have become good at it.
