In the last several months, I have had a number of briefings and read my fair share of press releases about development tools hosted 100% in the cloud with no local installation needed. I have been moving in the same direction. For my job, the only local applications that I use are a decent text editor, Visual Studio, and the OutSystems Agile Platform stuff; even then, all of my files are stored and version controlled by cloud servers.
I always felt that software development would be one of the final bastions of the client/server model in the fight against the cloud, but now I am not so sure. I am curious to hear whether you’re using the cloud for your development work.
