Microsoft is holding a “Code 7” contest, where you can win up to $17,777 and a trip to PDC 09. What I found odd is that it is not open to residents of Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and… Quebec. Quebec seems rather out of place on that list.

AJAX Control Toolkit, ASP.NET MVC 2 Preview gets updates
The latest version of Microsoft’s AJAX Control Toolkit has been released with a number of significant changes. In addition, the Preview of ASP.NET MVC 2 has been updated to preview 2 with some new features added as well.
Google is not so friendly to Android developer
Google has issued a cease and desist to developer Steve Kondik. His crime? Issuing an Android mod that bundles some non-open source Google apps into Android.
InfoQ has in-depth details, but in a nutshell, Google’s position is that some of its apps can generate revenue for Google, and therefore, must be paid for (app store revenue, ads, licensing to partners, etc.) separately from the base OS. I can see why Kondik thought this would be acceptable; after all, these are applications that any computer user can access for free. While Google may be in the legal clear, this sends a pretty strong message to a developer community that still has not gained much traction. If I were Google, I would have opted to include these apps in something like the Microsoft Community Promise, so they could retain their rights and developers could keep doing what they do. Instead, they’ve just managed to make themselves look like ogres. Good work, Google.

Micro Focus Action Program expands
The Micro Focus Action Program, which helps universities teach COBOL programming skills, now has 75 member universities on board. The most recent university to sign up is Wilkes University in Pennsylvania.
