Oracle have
released a list of validated Linux configurations. These configurations
have been tested and validated–they include pre-tested hardware,
software and configuration guidelines, as well as documented best
practices. Oracle finds that many support issues are due to systems
being incorrectly configured; by providing recommended configurations it
is hoped that a large number of these issues are avoided, therefore
reducing support costs.
The validated configurations obviously only involve Oracles stragic
partners–on the hardware front this is not too restrictive (Dell, EMC,
HP, IBM, Network Appliance, Sun), however this does mean that when it
comes to choosing an underlying Linux distribution customers are limited
to Red Hats’ Enterprise Linux or Novells’ Suse Linux Enterprise Server;
this is obviously because they are commercially supported systems.
The current validated configurations can be found here. A full press release is also available.
