Who’s it for?

The Samsung SyncMaster 2243BWX is aimed at graphics designers, network administrators, and even home users who need a large amount of screen real estate without a large desktop footprint; and at around $200, there won’t be very much wallet impact either. Also, with both analog and digital inputs, this monitor is compatible with almost any computer on the market today.

What problem does it solve?

Most corporate-issued computers come with 17 inch monitors at either 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024 resolution. This screen, with its native resolution of 1680 x 1050, gives users approximately twice the virtual space.

If you work with large spreadsheets, complicated administrative tools, or complex graphics and have difficulty viewing the entire contents of your files at once, you can get the most out of this monitor’s size and resolution. Also, with its ergonomic features and uncommon pivot feature, this monitor is able to handle whatever task you throw at it.

Standout features

  • 22 inch widescreen – A fairly sizeable monitor for a relatively small desktop footprint
  • Adjustable height – The stand provides five or six inches of height adjustment for optimal viewing
  • Pivot – An uncommon feature in monitors, this display will rotate 90 degrees to a portrait view for easy reading of documents, Web pages, or other media
  • Swivel – The monitor stand has a built-in turntable which allows for easy turning when sharing with nearby co-workers or visitors
  • Tilt – A more common feature, tilting adjusts the viewing angle for better ergonomic control
  • USB hub – Built in to the stand is a two-port USB hub for the easy connection of flash drives, cameras, or other external devices
  • Bright – The contrast and brightness of this screen is great. I felt like I needed to turn it down from the factory standard

What’s wrong?

  • Not fully high definition – At 1680 x 1050, this monitor is slightly under to 1080p HD standard. Samsung does offer 22 inch models that are 1920 x 1080, which meet the 1080p standard, but those don’t offer the ergonomic adjustments. As 1080p was not necessary for my work, I went with the ergonomic model.
  • Cable management – The stand comes with a cable clip, however the cables were not cooperative when clipped to the stand with the monitor in portrait mode. I’ve found it better to just let the cables do what they want.

Competitive products

There are three similar models from other manufacturers, however the Acer model is the only one with a similar price; both the NEC and Zalman models cost quite a bit more. Also, only the Acer display includes a built-in USB hub.

Bottom line for business

Most users of large documents and graphics will find the size, resolution, and stunning image from this relatively inexpensive monitor well worth the price (approximately $200 on at the time of purchase). Also, with the flexibility offered by the ergonomic adjustments, there should be less strain for those who sit at their desk for long periods of time. The built-in USB hub is also a great feature especially if your computer tower is out of the way or you don’t have front USB ports available.

I purchased two of these to use side by side for network monitoring, file comparisons, and other tasks where I need two windows visible simultaneously. I especially like the portrait mode, and I typically leave my second monitor in that mode because it essentially provides two 1024 x 768 windows stacked on top of each other.
