On Tuesday, Salesforce launched an update to its AppExchange enterprise cloud marketplace, offering new features such as intelligent search, personalized recommendations, and embedded learning via its Trailhead platform.
Some 87% of Salesforce customers and 89% of the Fortune 100 currently use AppExchange apps, according to a press release. Salesforce and its ecosystem of customers and partners are predicted to drive the creation of 3.3 million new jobs and more than $859 billion in business revenues worldwide by 2022, a recent IDC study found.
The new AppExchange is inspired by popular consumer shopping experiences, according to Salesforce. For example, it now allows customers to gain personalized recommendations based on their location, install history, site activity, and profile data. These recommendations change based on the listings and categories that are viewed, as well as what search terms are used. Once an app is installed, a user's recommendations will change based on those apps, as well as what companies who installed similar products are using.

The marketplace has also integrated content from the Salesforce Trailhead learning offering, so users can learn best practices and new skills, as well as other solutions that may help their business. For example, options such as "Empower Managers and Agents with the Service Cloud Platform" can be found in the Product Collection pages to better help customers find the right apps for them, according to the release. And more than 70,000 peer reviews are available to users to determine which solution would be the best fit.
Along with apps, customers can now use the AppExchange to find Lightning Bolts, which Salesforce calls "out-of-the-box solutions that contain industry process flows, Lightning Components and Communities — all integrated with Salesforce." These solutions come from Salesforce partners, including Accenture, Appirio, Bluewolf, PwC, and Silverline, and are offered across several industries.
And with Lightning Data, business users can gain better data-driven insights with customer profiles by integrating third-party data sources. This tool can also help improve sales and marketing processes such as segmentation, targeting, scoring, and prioritization, with data specific to each company.
The AppExchange includes thousands of industry solutions for manufacturing, financial services, healthcare, retail, and more, according to the release. For example, in the financial industry, nCino's Bank Operating System helps banks originate and fund loans. And in health care, Zipari's InsureCX offers insurance companies real-time data about their members, as well as automated workflows, rule-based recommendations, and member engagement management, according to the release.
"Thanks to our customers and partners AppExchange has grown into the leading enterprise cloud marketplace, delivering more than 4,000 amazing solutions that are driving growth for business across every industry," Leyla Seka, executive vice president of AppExchange, said in the release. "We're excited to launch the new AppExchange, which offers a more personalized experience for customers with smart recommendations, embedded Trailhead learning and deep industry focus to further unleash the power of Salesforce."
The marketplace's evolution from a simple app directory to an app ecosystem could help business users find solutions they did not previously know where available, Seka told ZDNet. AppExchange will eventually act as a hub where customers can find anything related to Salesforce, "whether you're buying an app, a component, data set, or eventually maybe even a bot or algorithm," Seka told ZDNet.
