Tech Tip: Fix OWA server timeout errors

If you've installed Outlook Web Access (OWA) 5.5 on a server other than the system that hosts the mailboxes, your users may receive the following error message.

ASP 0113 Server Timeout: The maximum amount of time for a script to execute was exceeded. You can change this limit by specifying a new value for the property Server.ScriptTimeout or by changing the value for script timeout in the registry.

This error may occur only occasionally, and it may be difficult to reproduce. The root cause for this error is slow name resolution. If the OWA server tries to resolve the Exchange server's name and times out, the user sees the ASP 0113 error.

One way to resolve this problem is to add an entry for the Exchange server in the OWA server's HOSTS file. Follow these steps:

  1. Locate the HOSTS file in the %Windir%\System32\Drivers\Etc folder.
  2. Edit the HOSTS file with a text editor (such as Notepad) to add the IP address and host name of the Exchange server.
  3. Save the HOSTS file back to the %Windir%\System32\Drivers\Etc folder with no extension.

The OWA server should now be able to resolve the Exchange server's name locally, alleviating any problem with slow name resolution.
