One in 10 IT Pros are Registered TechRepublic Members;
Represent the Fastest-Growing Segment of U.S. Workforce
LOUISVILLE, Ky., October 30, 2000—TechRepublic, Inc. (http://www.techrepublic.com), the leading online destination developed exclusively for IT professionals by IT professionals, announced today that its award-winning site has registered its one millionth member. Since its launch in May 1999, the site has amassed the largest community of IT professionals on the Web, representing all levels of the industry. Today, TechRepublic has achieved a critical mass of 10 percent of the world’s IT workforce.
“The one millionth member mark is a milestone for TechRepublic, and we are thrilled to have reached this achievement so soon,” said Tom Cottingham, cofounder and CEO of TechRepublic. “When we first created the site in 1999, the goal was to reach one million members to set ourselves apart from the competition. We achieved the mark a full year ahead of our original projections. Today, TechRepublic is the place where the IT industry goes for the expert knowledge they need to make smart business decisions.”
TechRepublic is an independent arm of Gartner Group Inc. (NYSE: IT and ITB), the world’s leading business technology advisor, based in Stamford, Conn. A recent industry study estimates that there are about 10 million IT professionals worldwide. Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Commerce issued a report estimating that the IT sector accounts for more than one-third of the recent growth in the U.S. economy.
“TechRepublic is a Web site that is built upon the knowledge and expertise of the community of our members. The IT professionals who visit TechRepublic.com define who and what TechRepublic is,” said Jon Pyles, vice president, membership. “To that end, we constantly listen to our million members and respond to their needs by keeping the information and resources at TechRepublic fresh and relevant.”
To celebrate the membership milestone, the TechRepublic site will dedicate an entire week of activities and content to the values and accomplishments of IT pros around the world. From Nov. 13 to Nov. 17, TechRepublic editorial content will focus on the success stories of its members and how TechRepublic has helped provide the content, community, and tools that IT professionals need to succeed. The “Celebrating Our First Million” event will feature member profiles, articles devoted to member stories, moderated discussions between members and TechRepublic experts, and introductions to updated tools and services, including IT Radar, TechRepublic’s marketplace connecting buyers and sellers of information-technology services.
TechRepublic has established a rich network of IT professional communities. Its members, from the chief information officer to the help desk professional, spend nearly three times longer on TechRepublic.com as competitors’ members spend on their Web sites. Since TechRepublic.com’s launch, 13,000 IT-related problems submitted on the site have been solved by TechRepublic community members.
