Leader of Leading Online Destination for IT Professionals Recognized in
Ohio Valley Region E-Business Category
LOUISVILLE, Ky., July 6, 2000—Tom Cottingham, president and CEO of TechRepublic (www.techrepublic.com), the leading online destination developed exclusively for IT professionals by IT professionals, has been selected as the winner of the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for E-Business in the Ohio Valley region. Cottingham is now eligible to compete for one of several national award categories, including the 2000 National Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award, to be presented in November.

“It’s great to be recognized by Ernst & Young, and it’s a validation of what we’re doing at TechRepublic,” said Cottingham. “The real winners of this award are TechRepublic’s more than 160 employees and the IT professionals that have joined our site from around the world.”

Cottingham’s entrepreneurial efforts began in 1984 when he cofounded The Cobb Group, a producer of technology-focused newsletters, where he served as president for two years. After Ziff-Davis acquired The Cobb Group in 1991, Cottingham’s executive role within the parent company expanded to include executive roles with Family PC and Computer Gaming World. He also helped open three offices for Ziff-Davis in Europe. Before founding Cobb, he served in several key marketing roles at computer book publisher Que Corporation during its start-up phase. Along with chief financial officer Kim Spalding, Cottingham founded TechRepublic in 1997 and launched the site on the Web in 1999.

In March 2000, TechRepublic was acquired by Gartner, the world’s leading business technology advisor. In only 14 short months, TechRepublic membership ranks have exploded to more than 675,000 IT professionals.

Cottingham was selected as the E-Business Entrepreneur of the Year award winner by a select panel of past winners, bankers, attorneys, and venture capitalists from the Ohio Valley area, which includes Kentucky and southern Indiana. Awards are given to owners and managers who are primarily responsible for the growth of a company and who have demonstrated excellence and extraordinary success in such areas as innovation, financial performance, and personal commitment to their businesses and communities.
