In Windows Vista, there is more than just a Standard User account and an Administrator account. You have a third type of account that is great for someone who is visiting you or needs to access the Internet from your computer. This type of account is great when you have “snoopy” family members who might want to read your email or look at your finances.

By default the Guest account is turned off. Whenever you have a visitor, simply turn the Guest account on and you can give a family member or visitor access to the Internet. The only thing a Guest account can do is use your computer; they cannot change your settings or see any other user settings. It is a very safe way to give access to your computer temporarily rather than create a user account.

In order to turn on the Guest Account, follow these steps.

  1. Click the Start button and type user accounts in the Instant Search field.
  2. Click Manage Another Account and double click the Guest account.
  3. Click Turn On the Guest account and you are done.
  4. Repeat the same process to turn off the Guest account.
