Last week’s Question of the Week was submitted by wthimmes: “Why can’t common management processes (such as editing reports, carrying out performance appraisals, etc.) be automated in this golden age of technology?” Here are a couple responses we received from the TR community:

SKDTech: “I would suggest that the reason for this is that we have yet to create an actual Artificial/Simulated Intelligence. Computers are great for crunching numbers, but intangibles are still beyond them. For instance, a computer can easily generate a report on help desk call times but is unable to properly evaluate the relative difficulty of the problem to skill level of the people on either end of the line. And to address the other specific example, most performance appraisals of personnel that I have experienced involve fairly equal amounts of hard statistics/facts and intangibles such as customer service and teamwork.”

The Scummy One: “If all of the management tasks were automated, there would be so little need for managers. They are scared of this happening, so they are not looking to technology for help in these areas.”
