VUDU, the streaming set-top box that I reviewed back in October, has announced that they will now offer HD content. The first two movies offered in HD are The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy. Those two films became available on November 23rd and are free to all new and existing VUDU owners. On December 11th, VUDU will offer The Bourne Ultimatum in HD on the same day it is released on DVD. Unlike the first two Bourne films which are free, Ultimatum will set you back $24.99.
As I said in my initial review, I like just about everything about VUDU. The box, the UI and the video quality are all excellent. My problem is still the price of box ($399) and the content. I can buy an HD-DVD of the Bourne films for $25-35 each. I’m not willing to pay almost as much for a digital download, even if it is HD.
If VUDU can come up with a way to get the price of the box to the $200-250 range and create a reasonably-priced all-you-can-eat subscription plan, then I would be all over it, especially if they are offering HD content. That would make me cancel my mail-order DVD subscription in a heartbeat.
