There some mornings I don’t want to get out of bed. There are the cold and rainy days, which everyone can relate to… then there are the days when I have something to do at work which I have been putting off. And lately, that has been creating database maintenance screens. I know that data just doesn’t appear in a database table by itself and that users need the ability to update data, it is just that creating maintenance screens is not my idea of a good time.

Imagine my surprise when I started playing with the new grid view control in Visual Studio.NET 2005, where you can use the Server Explorer to make a connection to your database. Just drag your table over to your ASP.NET page and it automatically inserts the grid view control and you can turn on the options to enable paging, sorting, editing, deleting, the works! From that point, all you need to do is do a little formatting and voila!… an instant maintenance facility for your database table. And without any coding required.

Now why can’t everything be like this? Why can’t I drag something out of the freezer, put it on the table and magically, a three course dinner appears? Or maybe drag some clothes out of the clothes hamper, drop them on the floor and amazingly enough they become clean and pressed? Now THAT would be a reason to get out of bed in the morning.
