After the cheap Linux-powered mini desktop, Zonbu unveiled its laptop offering that is also inexpensive and based on a service contract.

An excerpt from TechNewsWorld:

The new notebook PC will be manufactured by Everex and will be available in the first quarter of 2008. Although the Zonbu’s software is still in beta, consumers anxious to buy the machine can pick up the notebook loaded with the beta software from the Zonbu Web site. Once the software has been finalized, systems running the beta software will automatically be updated with the final version.

The configuration of the notebook includes:

  • Via C7-M processor running @ 1.5GHz
  • 15.4-inch display
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 60 GB Hard Disk
  • DVD-RW/CD-RW drive
  • Integrated Graphics, 10/100 MBps LAN and Wireless 802.11 b/g networking

On the software side, the laptop runs on Gentoo, a variant of Linux, and includes 20 software applications, such as Firefox, OpenOffice, Evolution E-mail, Skype, an IM that works with most instant messenger networks, and a host of games.

Also, the notebook includes 50 GB of online storage, automatic software upgrades, data backup, and unlimited technical support.

An excerpt from BusinessWire:

“People fell in love with the Zonbu Mini because it freed them from all of the hassles associated with computer maintenance,” said Zonbu CEO Gregoire Gentil. “Now they can have the same benefits on-the-go with the new Zonbu Notebook.” According to Gentil, people shouldn’t have to be their own IT administrators. “We don’t want people to spend a single minute worrying about configuration, setup, crashing hard drives, viruses, hackers, or data loss. That’s our job,” said Zonbu CEO Gregoire Gentil.

The notebook will be available in three subscription plans:

  • $279 with a two-year service plan ($14.95 per month).
  • $379 with a one-year plan ($14.95 per month).
  • $479 for plan.
