The silicon.com CIO50 - now in its fifth year - is our annual list of the CIOs and IT directors who have been deemed the most influential and innovative in the UK, according to the votes of their peers.
silicon.com started compiling the CIO50 list five years ago to reflect the growing importance of the CIO and how essential the smart application of technology has become to organisations of all sizes.
The list covers heads of IT from both the public and private sector, and organisations small and large.
The only people who can vote on the CIO50 are CIOs, and it is that recognition by their peers which makes inclusion in the CIO50 list such an accolade.
silicon.com compiles the list from the votes of UK heads of IT who are asked to judge the performance of their peers over the last year, using criteria such as leadership ability, delivery and execution record, innovation and influence. Each of the CIOs on the list is profiled in our exclusive CIO50 2011 special report and invited to the unveiling of the list.
The CIOs who voted this year include executives from some of the largest organisations in the UK, and this year's CIO50 was unveiled at an exclusive networking reception attended by the CIOs on the 2011 list, as well as tech chiefs who have made the list in previous years.
