Every year the silicon.com CIO50 list celebrates the most influential and innovative tech chiefs in the UK across all industries and organisations, both large and small, public and private.

The list is compiled from the votes of UK CIOs voting on the performance of their peers over the last 12 months, taking into account their leadership ability, delivery and execution record, innovation and influence.

Suffolk heads the list this year thanks to his influence in the public sector, where he leads the work of the government CIO Council in delivering its strategy of transforming public services using technology. He is also head of the IT Professionalism programme, aimed at creating an IT profession and career ladder in the public sector.

On top of this, he has overseen the creation of the Government ICT Strategy, a far-reaching plan to save £3.2bn annually from 2013/14 using new approaches to public sector IT.

Suffolk was joined in the top five by:

  • Jos Creese, Head of IT, Hampshire County Council
  • Ben Wishart, COO International & Group CIO, Whitbread
  • Neil Cameron, Former Global CIO, Unilever
  • Joe Harley, Director General of Corporate IT and CIO, Department for Work and Pensions

"Intelligent investment in technology is the key to making any organisation more effective and more efficient. Especially in these tough times it is vital that both the public and private sector seize the benefits of using technology wisely," said Steve Ranger, editor of silicon.com.

"We are delighted to announce John Suffolk has been voted the most influential CIO in the UK, reflecting his enormous importance to the technology strategy of the public sector."
