Ubuntu (the popular Debian derived Linux distribution) has announced the planned release of a new Ubuntu flavour this April. Ubuntu Studio will be a targeted at the audio, video and graphics enthusiast or professional wishing to work on a Linux platform. Discussion of the project is underway on the Ubuntu wiki with sections discussing project goals, opinion polls, look & feel and potentially included package lists. The distribution will have its own installation media and include a real-time enabled kernel.
I’ll be interested to see how this distribution gets along—I often find that using multimedia applications under Linux is uncomfortable and the quality of applications to be poor (in terms of workflow, reliability, output quality etc). I will defiantly obtain a copy of this on release and give it a try; no matter how good it is, I very much doubt that Apple have anything to worry about.
