Ubuntu (the popular Debian derived Linux distribution) has announced the planned release of a new Ubuntu flavour this April. Ubuntu Studio will be a targeted at the audio, video and graphics enthusiast or professional wishing to work on a Linux platform. Discussion of the project is underway on the Ubuntu wiki with sections discussing project goals, opinion polls, look & feel and potentially included package lists. The distribution will have its own installation media and include a real-time enabled kernel.
I’ll be interested to see how this distribution gets along--I often find that using multimedia applications under Linux is uncomfortable and the quality of applications to be poor (in terms of workflow, reliability, output quality etc). I will defiantly obtain a copy of this on release and give it a try; no matter how good it is, I very much doubt that Apple have anything to worry about.
